Same problem (kmail crashes on startup) occurs in Suse 12.1 but only with
existing users. So new users, kmail/kontact will start OK.
The "workaround" of adding a ~/Maildir directory has no effect.
Makes no difference if started as kmail or as kontact - still fails.
