I just checked with my current KMail version. The error is a bit different now:

The outgoing Mail is placed in the outbox. Sending gives back an error stating
that the message was sent successfully, but could not be removed from the
outbox. And indeed, in the outbox I have all the mails I sent in the last weeks
and they cannot be removed.
