At the moment I can not test anymore. I have kind of given up on Kmail2 and
reverted back to Kmail1.
But the problem was: 
- New messages did not appear in the message list while using unread mode.
- At the same time the counter of that folder in the folder list showed new
mails
- switching to another folder and back, then updated the content of the message
list.
