I was also having this problem. It probably happened because I upgraded from
KDE 4.3.5 to 4.5.2. Also followed the steps in comment #3 but I selected
"Default Address Book" that showed up in the akonadi resource list, and just
had to set the new akonadi-resource as the default address book. No other
change in kmail or kaddressbook was necessary.
