I already asked you to stop with XDG_ nonsense, it's completely unrelated to
this issue.

Now.

Actually Akonadi::Control::start() may even work well (return proper status),
but... akonadi self-test dialog box is displayed *nevertheless*, and when it's
clicked it terminates application so end effect is identical.
