I too noticed this, there is no number of unread messages as an overlay.
To me it looks like KMail was ported to KStatusNotifierItem, but that should
not be a problem since

void KStatusNotifierItem::setOverlayIconByPixmap(const QIcon& icon)

exists and a QIcon can be constructed from a QPixmap. But I have no idea what
the code looks like so this may not be possible.
