Hej,

1) Please make sure you are using a 'Personal Contacts' address book to store
the contact groups in. A plain vCard based address book doesn't support contact
groups.

2) There have been several issues regarding contact group handling in 4.4 which
have been fixed in 4.5 and trunk. Works fine for me in 4.5
