Well an update from me.

As I had backed up my home folder i went into /~mail/ and deleted everything
there.

Viola it works!! got all emails from the pop server, copied all files from the
backup in. then started to go through my newly downloaded emails and started to
sort them out, delete those that I'd read or have no interest in now.
went to trash, removed deleted files now guess what - Crash!!!!

below is another bug report from this recent crash.
Will try to recover from this one by looking

Now to try and solve the issue (note I'm plucking at straws) I renamed the lock
file in ~/mail to lock.old
