Same happens here, Debian Squeeze / KDE 4.4.3.

This workaround worked for me:

But, what I think is better. Once you get to open a working contact, configure
summary view so that you disable all plugins within the summary view. It worked
for me...and don't need to restart akonadictl (editing kontact_summaryrc file
should do the trick also if you are not able to get a responsive kontact
instance)
