I had a similar issue (IMAP/SSL-Plain). I changed my mail password but kmail
doesn't alert me that it can't check for new mail. It just does nothing. You
even can it the check button and nothing happens(no error or notice). You have
to go in the account settings and change password there. (kmail/kontact 4.4.3
on gentoo x86_64)
