Same problem here using KDE 4.4.1.  As a workaround, I stopped using the
summary view, and then I didn't get another freeze till now.

As soon as I open the summary once, I can be sure that the next event added
will freeze kontact.  But the good news is, that even when killing kontact
using kwin's "this application doesn't respond > terminate", the new event is
still there after restarting kontact.
