Exactly the same problem here and this is sadly a major annoyance.
The only workaround to me is also killing all kmail and kio_imap processes.

Though Kmail is my favorite, I had pretty much the same kind of issue with all
the clients I have tried : Evolution, Sylpheed, etc.

Why is there such an issue with Imap ?
