There is a problem that kmails mail fetching thread is not seperated from the
GUI. This is one of the most hated bugs in this bugzilla. It will be fixed with
the move to akonadi in KDE 4.5. So this can be fixed. 
The question is why kmail takes so long to fetch mails for you
