I am no longer convinced it's IMAP that's causing the problem. All I know is
that after closing KMail in the VNC session and shutting down the VNC server,
when I come back to the local console and try to send an email after launching
KMail from the local console, about 99% of the time, it hangs until I kill
KMail, Akonadi and all POP/IMAP sessions. Once I have done that and restarted
KMail all is well until the next day when I log into the local console after a
VNC session.
