I have experienced this issue with KDE4.4.4 (Gentoo, AMD64).

At the least Kontact (or Kmail) should display some kind of error message or
have a timeout when trying to connect to Akonadi.

A "akonadictl restart" caused Kontact to become responsive again. This happens
when I use Kontact from a remote session using NX.
