looking at http://userbase.kde.org/Akonadi_4.4/Troubleshooting, i executed 

  kcmshell4 kcm_akonadi

and filled in the appropriate information... but i still haven't removed
'lokalhost' from /etc/hosts yet... should try that sometime...
