I am having the same problem, and THANK YOU for pointing out the autosave
directory.  That is a big help as now I have a chance at retrieving my work
that I forgot to save in the drafts folder.  My recent mail is in
.kde/share/apps/kmail/autosave/cur  but does not come up on restarting Kontact
ever any more.
