To me it looks like, this is solved (at least) in KMail 1.13.2 / KDE 4.4.2
(Ubuntu 10.04 LTS).
By right clicking column headers  in folder window I can select the columns to
be displayed.
There can be selected "unread" and "total" number of messages.
