I retested this today and I was able to write emails, to browse between folders
in the folder view and to open and close tabs while the Imap resource was
syncing though it was fairly slow (Especially lauching the Composer which took
about 20s and emails appearing in Message List, the rest was ok in my opinion).

I guess there is a jugement call to be made on whether this is acceptable or
not.

Note: this test was made with 'Enable Serverside Subscription' checked. See Bug
#252164 for the same bug with 'Enable Serverside subscription' unchecked.
