Got this very same behavior (and workaround from above works too) on Fedora
Core 14 with:

 KMail Version 1.13.5 
 Using KDE Development Platform 4.5.3 (KDE 4.5.3)

Hopefully akonadi rewrites in 4.6 KDEPIM will resolve this, otherwise it is
very well the main source of my frustrations with otherwise pretty well
functioning KDE environment.
