Comparing sizes in .kde4/share/apps/kmail/mail/inbox/cur/ in dolphin with
kmail2 varies heavily.
inbox kmail2: 623 mails, 3.6 MiB
inbox/cur dolphin: 608 files (8.2 MiB)
inbox/new "      :   8 "     (26.0 KiB)

Reproducible: Didn't try
