I found a hint at

Seems that disabling the E-mail module causes a crash.
If the module is set to false in <kontaktrc>
.
.
kontact_kaddressbookpluginEnabled=true
kontact_kmailpluginEnabled=false
kontact_knotespluginEnabled=true
.
.
it will crash
The settings window opens normally with the mail preferences as default.
It looks like disabling it sends some kind of pointer or such into the dark.
