Cancelling the sort of the inbox probably coincided with the automatic download
of a rogue email - one sent to me by a friend - "a multi-part message in MIME
format" with a page of html from Salon magazine which begins:

Once I had deleted that message from my 'Mail' folder, Kontact ceased crashing.

I think this probably isn't a bug.
