Thanks for looking into this.  I deleted all of my addressbook resources and
manually re-added them through the Akonadi configuration panel.  It now works
as you describe.  This may have been a 4.3 -> 4.4 automatic migration issue. 
I'll repost here if I encounter the problem again.
