Problem is, I have no clue about the Debian package management.
I can give you an example on openSuse, which is RPM based:
kmail without the debug information is in a package called kmail-4.3.1-156.2
Then there is another package called kdepim4-debuginfo-4.3.1-156.2 which I need
to install in addition to have a nice backtrace.

If that doesn't give you enough information, please ask the question regarding
the debug package again on the PIM users mailing list kdepim-users at kde.org

A hint regarding the initial problem:
Try to recreate the index files. You can do this by right-clicking on a folder
-> Properties -> Maintenance -> Recreate Index
