The behaviour mentioned in comment #43 is pretty easy to trigger. Simply put
kmail in offline mode, wait for 5min and then put kmail back into online mode
(using 3 different IMAP accounts here). It is impossible to resume checking of
mails. The progress bar at the bottom right of the kmail window never finishes,
even if you leave kmail like that for an hour. 

This can be confirmed in kmail-1.12.1, using kde-4.3.1 and kontact-4.3.1.
