With "kmails addressbook" I think you mean the global addressbook in KDE, used
with e.g. kaddressbook.
The files KDE uses are simple text files (one or many, depending on the way
yoou set up your resources). A single file resource can be e.g.
/home/koller/.kde4/share/apps/kabc/std.vcf

To recover, simply use the old file as a file resource.
