I'm also having this problem.
My system is KDE 4.2.3 with QT 4.5.1.

In my case, when I try to open an e-mail, the time that KMail takes to open it
is proportional to the numbers of files attached with this message. I'm using a
gmail account with dIMAP.

The problem has the same characteristics described previously, when I try to
open a e-mail as described in the last paragraph, KMail hangs-up, starts to use
a big amount of CPU and took 5 to 20 seconds to get the message open.

Except for this slowly, everything on KMail regarding these messages with a big
numbers of attached files seems to be working fine. So I'm able to open every
attached file and see the message without any problem.
