I have exactly the same problem. My password starts with !
If I enter password in opened popup IMAP and SMTP works fine. If I save the
same password next time when kmail is opened it reports about invalid method or
wrong password. If I change password (which does not start with !) on mail
serve everything works fine. Kmail version is 1.11.3 (using KDE 4.2.3)
KDE Wallet is disabled.
