Yes I was running the desktop for a period longer than five days, resumed maybe
two or three times during that period.

This problem lasted for a week or so for me, and then just disappeared.

I use kmail with gmail via IMAP for a couple of accounts, I used the accounts
via webmail for a perdiod, until kmail corrected itself.

(not sure if it's relevant kmail is the only kontact unit that was crashing)
