In the oxygen widget style, there is no empty field, it is drawn with the \/
arrow at the right. And also notice that this filed can be one not in the
drop-down list.

Basically, what you want is to have something like Opera or FireFox have in the
search field. Right?

This could be applied to the KDE drop-down in a lot of places.
