Maybe I was not clear enough on my problem. The trash is *not* counted against
the tray-icon ... Instead I see it as bold to the left in the folder overview.
Whenever I'm done reading my mail, it's the only folder left in bold, thereby
attracting my attention (and I admit: annoying me :-)

Checking or unchecking "Act on new" won't prevent the trash from becoming bold.
The only remedy so far is to manually mark the trash as read.
