This bug can actually be closed. 
It seems like something went wrong while updating openSuse (not sure which
version since I have been using updated version since 10.something) a way back
and that was what could have caused the problem. 
What I did was backed up my mail folder and deleted /.kde4. After which I got
the new mail folder overwritten by the old and it worked. All my contacts are
there and I haven't lost a single e-mail in the process. The only thing that I
had to do after was to recreat my e-mail accounts in KMail.
Everything is now working fine :)
