Sounds as if your kmail configuration has been screwed in some way. I don't
know why that happend - and without knowing that this is not fixeable. 
I'm closing this for the time being. Don't mind the ugly word "invalid" - but I
think if you have discovered a bug it is in configuration management. If you
can provide further info on that, report back here or file a new bug.
