I "lost" mail of two recent months.  I considered it wise to re-generate the
index files, so chose the "regenerate the index" option in kmail GUI,

I did NOT delete the existing index files.  My mail box has records of mail
over the last 4 years, so it is a fairly big one.

This action provoked the crash.
