I did successfully importing the mail in the end:

Perhaps there is a 'read the manual' issue here but the crash happened when I
chose:

  .mozilla-thunderbird/nnnnnn.default/Mail/Local Folders

I successfully imported Thunderbird mail by selecting:

  .mozilla-thunderbird/nnnnnn.default/
