I just added hardy-backports to my distro's repositories, and received an
update to KMail among others.

Problem disappeared.

Current KMail version is 1.9.10, Kontact 1.2.9, KDE 3.5.10. Seems it's been
fixed already between 3.5.9 and 3.5.10 :)
