Having an "ignore new mail in this folder" checkbox, AND having that
configuration apply the behavior specified in this bug's description (*) will
indeed close this ticket and most of the other tickets mentioned above. 

Having this behavior automatically applied to trash folders (as configured in
the IMAP settings) instead of a checkbox would also be a huge improvement and
would work well enough for me.

[*] i.e. not counting new mail in the specified folder towards all the
different "unread mail" counts. The current/previous implementation of the
"ignore new mail" functionality did not do that properly.
