Summary: smtp send gets a server response which fails to
recognize the sender. Cannot send email
           Product: kmail
           Version: 1.9.9
          Platform: unspecified
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: NOR
         Component: general
        AssignedTo: kdepim-bugs kde org
        ReportedBy: gsheward xtra co nz

Version: 1.9.9 (using 3.5.9 "release 62.4" , openSUSE )
Compiler: Target: i586-suse-linux
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.22.17-0.1-default

I have tried kmail on KDE 3.9.5, the latest for suse10.3 and also on KDE 4.0.4 stable for suse10.3. Kmail will not send email via smtp, authorised or unauthorised. Today is 2 jun 2008, and the problem has been around for two to four weeks. It may have been induced by a recent change/update to kmail via suseupdater, as kmail had been working excellently until this happened.

While i am here, kde4.0.4 stable is of no use as a desktop if applications that depend on kde3 wont run in kde 4 (amarok, k3b are two such apps).Hence, I have installed kde 3.9.5 and I will mention that I am reluctant to cosider upgrading to suse11.0 because of kde4 may not support applications for some time; I do hope that i am wrong here.

I know the information in the fields of kmail are correct as this same information is used in thunderbird, which I have temporaily switched to and it does send email. And that raises another issue, I cannot export my mail to thunderbird, I can export the address book. Exporting mail out of kmail to another email application or a file (to reimport later) would be good especially when i upgrade suse. I have found that I need to save my files before updating suse, and reloading a new suse from scratch and then import my files. via suseupdater.

I wish I new more about the inner workings of kde and suse to be of more valuable help, unfortunately I don't.

Graham
