Summary: Kmail modifies files all the time, hogs resources
           Product: kmail
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: RedHat RPMs
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: NOR
         Component: general
        AssignedTo: kdepim-bugs kde org
        ReportedBy: stephan.matthiesen gmx de

Version: (using KDE 4.0.83)
Installed from: RedHat RPMs

Kmail takes a very long time to get responsive when it's started and uses most of the CPU for 15 minutes. The same happens also repeatedly when it has been running for a while, possibly when it checks for new mail, it just hogs all resources for 10 minutes.

I found that during this time it is modifying all index files (even for folders where nothing has changed for weeks) and apparently also all the maildir folders (although not the individual messages) and all mbox folders. A few folders have an expiry date (so one expects changes), but the majority doesn't and they haven't changed at all for a long time.

As this is a total of several thousand files, the resource usage is understandable, but it doesn't seem to serve any useful purpose...

This is also a problem for backups as everything is regarded as modified and backed up again and again every day...

I'm not sure what other information would be useful.
