According to this page, Kate is not be installed. 

Did you checkout svn://anonsvn.kde.org/home/kde/trunk/KDE/kdesdk ?

 Thomas : wouldn't it make more sense to replace kate (lives in kdesdk) with kwrite (lives in kdebase) by default ?
