I agree, this default should be changed! 

If you press "reply", or simply use the shortcut "R", you think (intuitively) that you reply to the address that is listed as the sender. In fact, it may not be apparent other from the "To"-header that the original message was sent to a mailing list. But usually one ignores the "To"-header, when reading emails, and looks only at the sender.
