As Bug 177410 was marked as duplicat, let me add some comments:

1) The password doens't have to start with a "!". At least a "!" at the end
triggers the problem as well
2) I don't have problems with imap or pop3! Only smtp seems to be affected, as
confirmed in comment 1 in bug 177410
