shows the changes I [re]added to detect the account from the selected folder.  
However that now fails because (in my case) of all my KMAccounts, all but one
of them have a null folder(), and of the other one, its child() is null.  This
worked when I originally fixed this bug, so what has changed in kmail since
then to create this behaviour? 

Hoping Thomas can fill in the blanks.
