Hallo, I have the same for quite a long time. Its also a connection to hispeed.ch. I have the impression, it depends the size of the mail. Small mail usually are sent, Email with attachment often hang. When I shut down the computer during the ~5 minutes hanging, the email arrive at the recipient, but still remain in the out box. Kmail 1.9.6, Opensuse 10.3.
