As suggested by Ray Ferguson, I added

  Option "XaaNoOffscreenPixmaps"

This fixed the problem on my laptop which includes an ATI Radeon Mobility X700. I use KMail 1.9.6 under KDE 3.5.6, from Kubuntu Feisty.
