There has been a flurry of updates on the openSUSE Build Service KDE 3.5.7
    http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE3/openSUSE_10.2/i586/ 

The two tagged 3.5.7.enterprise.0.20070831... were problemmatic: crashes after claiming UIDL not implemented on server, failure to keep UIDL data (thus multiple fetching of messages), and crash on attempt to delete some of these messages.

The updates I found posted today, 3.5.7.enterprise.0.20070904.708281-3.1, seems to have answered all the kmail issues!
