Try the following: 
1. Install debug-enabled KDE packages (see below).
2. Run "KDE_FORK_SLAVES=1 kmail" from a konsole.
3. Run "Check mail" in kmail
4. Look at the debug output from the konsole - some of it may be relevant to the problem.

In fact, I suggest we move this discussion to the kde kde org mailing list - there are more people reading that list than there are here. If this does turn out to be a real bug and not a config issue, we can reopen this report. Thanks!
