Having moved from Kubuntu Dapper to Debian Etch, on the same machine, "VIA Technologies, Inc. S3 Unichrome Pro VGA Adapter", the problem persisted, so I applied the fix, Option "XaaNoOffscreenPixmaps" under the Section "Device" in xorg.conf. It works.
