I can confirm the above behaviour for:
KDE 3.5.6 (Kontact 1.2.4)
on SuSE 9.3 (original RPMs from the "Latest KDE3" repository @ opensuse.org)
with the Basket package: basket-1.0.1_1-1.guru.suse93 (from guru's rpms)

After removing basket everything works perfectly again :-\
